The Marilyn Abel Award

In 2005 the Educational Paperback Association, now the Educational Book and Media Association, established the Marilyn Abel Award in honor of her long-term efforts and support in furthering the goals and growth of the organization.

Marilyn Abel served as Executive Secretary for 35 years and has been involved with the organization since its inception in 1975. Her experience at NAL and other publishing houses proved invaluable in her work at the EPA. In 1984, Abel received the Jeremiah Ludington Award, an award presented annual by the EPA to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the educational paperback business.

Each year, Abel chooses an organization to support with the Abel award, a $3000 check. The recipient of the 2008 Abel award is the National Coalition Against Censhorship. Previous winners include:

2007:Reading is Fundamental
2006:NYU Reading Recovery Program
2005:Marygrove College, Detroit, Department of Education
2004:Bela Hubbard Branch, Detroit Public Library
