Junior Library Guild is a Media Source company, along with JLG Classroom and the publications Library Journal, School Library Journal, and The Horn Book Magazine.

JLG was founded in 1929 as the Junior Literary Guild, a commercial book club devoted to juvenile literature. Today, JLG is the leading preK-12 book review and collection development service, helping more than 20,000 school and public libraries acquire the best new children’s, young adult, and adult crossover books for their collections. Our mission still follows editorial board member Eleanor Roosevelt’s mantra to put the right book in the hands of every reader—fostering the love of reading and learning as a path to lifelong success.

We are not a distributor. We are a unique collection development service that provides the best books to member libraries every month. We offer categories ranging from pre-K through grade 12, including nonfiction, mystery/adventure, graphic novels, fantasy, current trends, high interest, hi-lo for middle and high, Spanish-language for elementary and middle, and adult crossover fiction, and genre.

Because the JLG editorial team reads approximately 5,000 books every year to choose 800+ selections, our editors know the children’s and young-adult literature landscape like no one else. Our members trust us to put only exceptional books into the hands of their eager young readers and know that season after season, year after year, JLG Gold Standard Selections go on to collect starred or favorable reviews and earn industry honors and awards. For example, JLG selections won 73 awards/honors at ALA’s 2024 Youth Media Awards, including the winners of the Newbery, Caldecott, and Printz awards. A JLG
selection also won the 2024 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and a crossover selection won the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction.

Selection of a book by the Junior Library Guild can help sell books into other markets, provides a promotional opportunity for authors and illustrators, and markets the book to decision-making librarians across the country. We produce three lists a year—Spring, Fall, and Winter, chosen from publishers’ lists on a rolling schedule.

PLEASE NOTE: The JLG Editorial staff works remotely from locations across the country and can accept only electronic submissions.
